Psychological counseling, also known as coaching psychology, and psychotherapy are both forms of professional support for people facing emotional, psychological, or behavioral problems. Although there are some similarities, there are also differences between the two. The main difference between psychological counseling (conducted by psychologists) and psychotherapy (conducted by psychotherapists) essentially lies in the duration of the counseling/therapy and the severity and nature of the problems.
My service falls within the area of psychological counseling.
Psychological counseling generally involves short-term professional support focused on difficult life situations and solving specific problems. In psychological counseling, psychologists work with healthy individuals who are experiencing distress, want to prevent an illness, and therefore wish to proactively change their situation. The duration of counseling is time-limited. In contrast, psychotherapy is typically a longer-term treatment that is not time-limited, and it is suitable for people with a mental illness, deeper-seated emotional problems, and a significant impairment in daily life activities (more information on the American Psychiatric Association).
Psychological counseling is not financed by basic Swiss health insurance, unlike psychotherapy. Psychological counseling provided by FSP-certified psychologists is partially covered by certain Swiss supplementary insurances. However, there are significant differences among the various supplementary insurances. If you depend on financial support, I recommend that you speak with your supplementary insurance provider before you use my services.
